Low-emission zones in the United Kingdom
London ULEZ covers almost all Greater London. Ordinary cars need Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel; a non-compliant, non-exempt vehicle is subject to a daily charge.
Cities with low-emission zones
London, English Clean Air Zones and Scotland’s four LEZs use different schemes. Ordinary private cars are not among the basic chargeable class B or class C categories.

Cars in ULEZ
The standard for ordinary cars is Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel. Check the current ULEZ charge and payment method if the vehicle does not comply and has no exemption.
Vans, motorhomes and heavier vehicles may also be affected by the separate LEZ. Do not simply transfer the passenger-car rules to them.
Foreign registration numbers
Check that Transport for London holds the correct emissions information. If it does not, follow the registration instructions for vehicles registered outside the UK.
Allow processing time and keep confirmation. A request to add data is not proof that it has been accepted or that a journey requires no payment.
Other London charges
ULEZ, LEZ, Congestion Charge and any applicable tunnel tolls are separate systems. Compliance or payment for one does not settle the others.
Check the exact route and travel date, and assess discounts, exemptions and registration for each relevant scheme.
English Clean Air Zones
Class D zones can charge ordinary private cars. Class C covers vans, minibuses, heavy vehicles and taxis but not ordinary private cars; class B also excludes ordinary vans from its basic list. Check the local scheme and category.
For affected light vehicles the usual threshold is Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel, with Euro VI for buses and lorries. National CAZ payments can normally be made no later than six days after travel.
Scottish LEZs
Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow use continuously operating LEZs with a prohibition on non-compliant vehicles, rather than ordinary daily paid entry. Cars normally need Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel. Check exemptions and the actual city-centre boundary.
